Greater Trochanteric Pain Syndrome: The Hidden Cause of Outer Hip Pain

Updated: 4 hours ago

Greater Trochanteric Pain Syndrome

If you have pain on the outside of your hip that keeps you from sleeping on your side…or makes it painful to roll over in the middle of the night… you may be dealing with a condition called Greater Trochanteric Pain Syndrome, or GTPS.

For many people, this pain slowly starts to interfere with everyday life.

Getting in and out of the car hurts.Walking up or down stairs becomes painful.Even simple things like going for a walk or sleeping through the night become a struggle.

And when pain starts affecting your sleep… it can really put the brakes on your life.

What most people don’t realize is that chronic GTPS is usually not just inflammation.

In many cases, especially when the pain has lasted more than three months, the real problem is damage to the tendons that attach to the side of your hip.

Over time, those tendons can heal poorly.

They may develop poor blood supply, weaker collagen fibers, and become extra sensitive to normal movement and pressure.

When that happens, the tissue becomes less able to tolerate everyday activities like walking, climbing stairs, or lying on your side.

And that creates a frustrating cycle of pain, irritation, and reduced activity.

The good news is that research has shown that acoustic wave therapy can help address these underlying tendon problems.

Acoustic wave therapy works by stimulating the body’s natural healing process.

It helps increase blood flow to the injured tendon, stimulates the production of stronger collagen, and helps calm down the hypersensitive pain signals in the tissue.

In our clinic, we combine acoustic wave therapy with specific resistance exercises designed to safely load the hip tendons.

This type of tendon loading helps the tissue become stronger and more resilient, so it can better tolerate the stresses of daily life.

By combining these treatments, we’re not just masking the pain.

We’re addressing the underlying cause of Greater Trochanteric Pain Syndrome.

So you can sleep on your side again…get in and out of your car without wincing…and get back to doing the things that make your life active and vibrant.

If you think GTPS might be causing your hip pain, we’d be happy to help you find out if this treatment is right for you by offering you a Complimentary Pain Relief Consultation so you can sit down and have a conversation with me or my associate Dr. Christianson.
